Overview The Process Control Engineer is responsible to lead technical improvements in the maintenance department, as well as plant wide. This is done by following the lean six sigma process. This person will maintain and improve process capability. This person may be responsible for the process, product, or equipment improvements. It is expected that the incumbent would work in a manner of continuous improvement and document improvements to share with other manufacturing sites. The Process Control Engineer reports to the Enterprise Excellence Manager.Works #4 is a float glass manufacturing plant operating two 650 tons per day tanks, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Works #4 produces float glass for use by other VITRO plants and by outside customers in various glazing, mirror and automotive applications. The Maintenance department assists the plant in achieving its goals by providing timely maintenance and engineering support.The Process Control Engineer supervises outside contractors and/or Maintenance personnel during the installation or development phase of a project.The person in this position communicates regularly with the Enterprise Excellence Manager on significant maintenance functions and assist in initiating plans for the improvement and expansion of production and plant facilities. He/She assists in coordinating and scheduling of engineering and maintenance activities.The incumbent works closely with other departments in determining process control needs and identifying process control problems. He/She finds cost-effective control solutions, assists in the preparation of cost estimates and authorization requests for management evaluation, and installs control improvements that will increase the efficiency and performance of plant production processes.The Process Control Engineer maintains contact with peers at other plants, so as to communicate innovations and successful applications of technology. From time to time, the incumbent may travel to other plants to assist in a technology transfer, or serve on a special committee commissioned to solve a particular problem. He/She is allowed a large degree of freedom in the pursuit of solutions, which ultimately result in projects ranging in cost from a few thousand to several hundred thousand dollars.The incumbent must support departmental and company goals with regard to achieving the highest levels of safety, housekeeping, and environmental standards. A constant awareness and application of OSHA electrical and mechanical requirements is essential in this position.The Process Control Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Excellence Manager staff, participating in weekly assessment of plant priorities and personnel assignments. He/She also participates in the Staff Safety Committee that directs, monitors, and evaluates safety matters in the plant. Responsibilities

  • Define the improvements necessary to make process improvements that yield results in safety, quality, cost and control.
  • Measure and demonstrate capability for the process/product/equipment assigned for improvement.
  • Analyze the information available or that you gather to determine where you need to work. You are expected to use lean six sigma tools like fishbones, failure mode and effects analysis, histograms, pareto, and a variety of statistical tools.
  • Make improvements through Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED), standardized work, designed experiments, 5S, Takt time, and work cell design.
  • Modify control plans to capture improvements, maintain a run chart to make sure the process does not drift, and teach employees how to use their control chart to improve effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance, engineering support, and recommendations on facility and company equipment and process to effectively utilize resources for process development, process/product improvements, and reliability in order to meet the needs and expectations of customers. Qualifications Bachelor---s degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical or equivalent) is required7+ years related Electrical Engineering field/process experienceMust demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and sound technical judgment.He/She must be familiar with the principles of programming control equipment and have direct programming experience.Direct experience with analog and digital control systems, as well as plant power facilities preferredExcellent communication skills (both verbal and written) for interactions with management, peers, other associates, vendors, and contractorsAbility to troubleshoot, analyze and resolve problems, plan, organize and share informationAbility to work independently and manage projects to established timelines. Performance is measured against project goals and specific assignmentsKnowledge and skill in human relations and the ability to work with all levels of plant supervision and P&M personnel is essential.
