Hours for this position may vary; primarily Monday - Friday 7a-3:30p. Occasional other shift and weekend work is required along with rotating holidays.

Nurse I/Nurse Manager performs complex nursing work at the proficient or expert level in a state mental health hospital. Works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Nurse Executive and has considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Provides clinical supervision to Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants. Organizes, establishes, and maintains unit routines and the therapeutic milieu. Coaches and teaches subordinate staff in the provision of population-specific nursing care and treatment. Supervises the administration of, or administers medications in compliance with facility policies and procedures. Develops, implements, or supervises the implementation of population-specific nursing interventions based on acceptable nursing standard of care and relevant evidence. Acts as a nursing team leader in collecting patient data and contributing appropriate information to the formulation of the patient?s interdisciplinary treatment plan. Must understand that duties, location of work, shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. May act as liaison after business hours between families, patients, DFPS, psychiatric nursing assistants, social workers, nurse managers and psychiatrists.

This position may require driving a state-owned vehicle.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy. Performs other duties as assigned.
2. Performs extensive initial and ongoing assessment of the patient?s nursing care needs to include medical, psychological, and social needs.
3. Develops nursing diagnoses or problem lists based on the assessment of the data and formulates the initial plan of care.
4. Develops and implements population specific nursing interventions based on accepted nursing standards of care and through review of current evidence.
5. Collaborates with other health care professionals by contributing nursing assessment date, diagnoses/problem lists and interventions to the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
6. Evaluates the outcomes of nursing interventions and documents the same in the medical record.
7. Provides comprehensive patient/family education regarding illness process, medications, coping skills, etc. to patients and families.
8. Establishes, monitors, and maintains the therapeutic milieu through clinical supervision and training of other Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants.
9. Administers or supervises administration of medications and other nursing intervention in accordance with facility policy and procedures.
10. Develops and implements training for subordinate staff regarding principles of population-specific nursing care, unit routines, facility policy and procedures, management directives, and milieu management, etc.
11. Acts as team leader in emergency situations (i.e. medical or psychiatric emergencies) including initiating and monitoring the appropriate use of resuscitative equipment or restraint/seclusion.
12. As assigned, acts as campus nurse, nurse supervisor, nurse manager in his/her absence.
13. Monitors Treatment, Intervention and Prevention Strategies (TIPS) formerly, Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) 1-6 and, in the absence of other staff, implements.
14. Other tasks and duties as assigned.
15. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency?s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Extensive knowledge of nursing procedures and practices.
2. Extensive knowledge of the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Rules and Regulation of the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
3. Ability to provide population-specific, evidence-based nursing care at the proficient or expert level to an assigned patient population.
4. Ability to perform an extensive assessment of the patients? nursing care needs to include medical, psychological and social needs.
5. Ability to formulate population-specific nursing diagnoses for the assigned patient population.
6. Knowledge of leadership or management principles as they apply to the unit or hospital setting.
7. Knowledge of teaching principles in order to provide both patient and staff education.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with others in one-to-one or group interactions.
9. Comprehensive knowledge of safe and appropriate use of restraint or seclusion as an intervention in the psychiatric setting.
10. Ability to develop and implement evidence-based nursing interventions appropriate to the assigned population.
11. Ability to provide leadership in the management of both medical and psychiatric emergencies.
12. Ability to obtain certification for basic Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and ability to perform and/or supervise the implementation of CPR in the clinical setting.
13. Ability to complete TIPS, formerly PMAB 1-3.2, prior to work on patient care unit.
14. Registration or Licensure Requirements:
1. Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact as described in Art. 4528b of the Nurse Practice Act.
2. If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

Initial Selection Criteria:
1. Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact as described in Art. 4528b of the Nurse Practice Act.

Additional Information:
The RN I Weekday Nurse Manager will primarily work Monday - Friday 7a-3:30p. Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Occasional other shift and weekend work is required along with rotating holidays.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
