The Rehabilitation Teacher I acts as instructor in the Psychosocial/Academic Education Program. The Rehabilitation Teacher I provides education to the patients of this facility, in compliance with individualized treatment plans regarding typing and computer skills and other classes as assigned. Assignments, products, tools, equipment and procedures are specified, but the worker has some freedom in the selection of procedures and/or methods used to accomplish tasks. The Rehabilitation Teacher I works under the general supervision of the Program Specialist and has no supervisory responsibility. The supervisor monitors the employee's work activities. Completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques and decisions are simple and based on well-defined guidelines. The Rehabilitation Teacher I has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property. This position is required to demonstrate appropriate role-modeling behaviors when in the presence of patients and staff in support of the Social Learning Program. This employee has full access to a limited set of records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Completes required documentation using CWS and established program procedures to provide information on attendance and treatment outcomes. Maintaining satisfactory ratings for progress notes and attendance logs.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of medical record at all times.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment by evaluating work area to promote safety and identify potential problems. Adheres to hospital and department safety plans and procedures.
  • Maintains competency through participation in all required hospital and departmental training/meetings (PMAB, Refresher Orientation, CPR, In-Service Training sessions, and morning meetings) to assure up to date skills and knowledge in required areas.
  • Facilitate classes to persons referred for services while utilizing modalities which enhance the patient's awareness of their psychiatric illness, addiction, in order to increase patient's knowledge and skills by following Activity Evaluation Standards and Social Learning techniques to achieve individualized treatment goals/objectives.
  • Patients' individual treatment goals/objectives will be addressed through their participation in rehabilitation therapy groups, which are conducted in accordance with the Activities Evaluation Standards. All lesson plans will be approved by the Program Specialist prior to classes. Classes will be held according to the schedule while utilizing modalities that enrich patient skills. In absence instructor will inform substitute of the necessary information to provide coverage.
  • Maintains an inventory of adequate supplies and ensures patient computers are in proper working order.
  • Serve as back-up in other program specific classes as schedule indicates. Substitutes will facilitate class according to directions given by the primary instructor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor within the person's abilities and classification in order to facilitate smooth program operation.
  • Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

Knowledge of computer skills including teaching, typing, programming, and operating systems.

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication. Interpersonal skills for positive interaction with individuals and groups.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to react calmly and appropriately in stressful situations.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Valid Driver's license.

Initial Selection Criteria:

  1. Two (2) years of work experience in teaching classes and/or providing therapeutic programming.

  2. Experience in social and rehabilitative services work or in teaching and counseling persons with disabilities. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, social work, education, or a related field is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

  3. Preferred: Knowledge in working with computers.

  4. Must demonstrate in Employment History Section of application the following:

a. Complete application leaving nothing blank.

b. Stable work history.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS HR Policy starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range. For internal applicants, there can be limitations in consideration of applicant's current classification and salary and is dependent upon available budget.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
